How Remote Compass Adjustment Works
Remote magnetic compass adjustment is carried out under the guidance of an experienced compass adjuster, without requiring an on-board visit.
The vessel’s crew receives detailed instructions by email on how to perform the necessary compass observations and record the results.
The recorded data is subsequently analysed by Scandia Compass Adjusters, and the crew receives the necessary guidance to complete the adjustment.
This approach offers a flexible and cost-effective solution, particularly for vessels operating in remote locations or with limited port time.
What You Need for a Remote Adjustment
Remote magnetic compass adjustment is performed in close cooperation with the vessel’s bridge team, under the professional guidance of Scandia Compass Adjusters.
To prepare for the adjustment, we will normally require:
- Compass information and photographs – Details and clear photographs of the magnetic compass, binnacle and its adjustment arrangements.
- Previous deviation table – A copy of the vessel’s latest magnetic compass deviation table, if available.
- Crew assistance – A deck officer or other suitable crew member to carry out observations and adjustments under our guidance.
- Suitable operating conditions – Sufficient sea room and favourable conditions to safely manoeuvre the vessel on the required headings.
- Reliable heading reference – A functioning gyrocompass with known or established accuracy.
- Email communication – To exchange instructions, observations, photographs and results throughout the process.
Detailed instructions, a practical quick guide and recording sheets are provided to the vessel.
Once the adjustment has been completed and the results have been reviewed and found satisfactory, a new signed and stamped magnetic compass deviation table is issued electronically for printing and retention on the bridge.
