How On-board Compass Adjustment Works

On-board magnetic compass adjustment is carried out by an authorized magnetic compass adjuster attending the vessel at an agreed location.

The compass is inspected, and the necessary adjustments are performed using appropriate heading references and observations while the vessel is manoeuvred through the required headings.

Following the adjustment, a residual deviation check is carried out to verify the compass accuracy.

Upon satisfactory completion, a new magnetic compass deviation table is prepared, signed and stamped for retention on the bridge.

Our services are planned in close cooperation with the vessel’s master and operator to minimise disruption to vessel operations.

When Is an On-board Compass Adjustment Required?

A magnetic compass may require adjustment following changes to the vessel or its magnetic environment, or when the observed deviation becomes excessive.

Typical situations include:

  • Installation of a new magnetic compass – Following installation or replacement of the compass.
  • Structural modifications or repairs – After steelwork, welding or modifications that may affect the vessel’s magnetic characteristics.
  • Installation of electrical or magnetic equipment – When new equipment is installed near the compass.
  • Unexplained changes in compass deviation – When compass errors increase or differ significantly from the existing deviation table.
  • Periodic verification – When required by the vessel’s flag state, classification society or operating procedures.

An on-board adjustment allows the compass adjuster to inspect the installation, perform the necessary corrections and verify the residual deviation.

Following satisfactory completion, a new signed and stamped magnetic compass deviation table is issued for retention on the bridge.

Preparing for an On-board Adjustment

To ensure an efficient magnetic compass adjustment with minimum disruption to vessel operations, a few practical arrangements should be made before the compass adjuster attends the vessel.

The following will normally be required:

  • Vessel information – Vessel name, IMO number, current location and expected schedule.
  • Previous deviation table – A copy of the latest magnetic compass deviation table, if available.
  • Compass information – Details of the magnetic compass installation and any known issues or recent modifications.
  • Suitable operating conditions – Sufficient sea room and suitable weather conditions to safely manoeuvre the vessel on the required headings.
  • Bridge team assistance – A deck officer and, where necessary, additional crew to assist during the adjustment.
  • Access to the compass – Safe and unrestricted access to the magnetic compass and its adjustment arrangements.

The adjustment is planned in close cooperation with the vessel’s master and operator, taking into account the vessel’s location, schedule and operational requirements.

Specific arrangements will be agreed in advance to ensure the adjustment can be completed safely and efficiently.
